COPY EDITING

What is Copy editing?

Copy editing (also known as copyediting and manuscript editing) is going over written manuscripts and perhaps re-writing a paragraph or two, it essentially is revising written material to improve readability.

One must not get confused by the terms copy editing and proofreading.

In a publishing house, copy editing is the strategy of improving what an author has written, it could a few simple paragraphs or it could be a suggestion to change part of the context. If the audience cannot understand something it needs to be rewritten in a more simplified manner.

Proofreading, on the other hand, is the correction of every spelling and grammatical error. It is a safety net that ensures that the author and copy editor didn’t miss anything.

Each job is different the copy editor will read the context if it makes sense whilst a proofreader will need to read each word and punctuation for errors. Both jobs however have the same outcome: to literally make each manuscript of writing as readable and error-free as possible.
